Новости из Британии. This month we talk: keeping your kidneys in check

This month we’re focusing on the 15 Healthcare Essentials, and in particular the fact that over a quarter of people with diabetes don’t receive an annual urine test – a crucial check to monitor kidney health.

Anyone can develop kidney problems; however, for people with diabetes, the urine test is important because you are at increased risk – with up to 40 per cent of people developing kidney disease at some point in their lives. In the very early stages there are usually no symptoms, so the test is really important to pick up any problems early, before they develop and you begin to feel unwell.

Find out more about the care you’re entitled to, and help our campaign by telling us about the care and services you receive

It's an exciting time as we continue to develop new ways to help us care, connect and campaign for people with and affected by diabetes. We are launching a brand new careline for parents and children, and a new way to help GPs support you. And our #Typle1uncut group have been busy making new videos - starting with two about hypos.

Thanks for all your support.

Diabetes UK

Diabetes UK responds to a new report released by the National Diabetes Audit which reveals that young adults with diabetes are less likely to get their annual health checks, and are less likely to have their condition under control.

National Diabetes Audit shows diabetes care needs new approach

The latest National Diabetes Audit for England and Wales should act as a wake-up call to the NHS that it needs to take action to improve patient care. Disappointingly, fewer people than last year received their eight care processes. Large regional variation and the continued low rate of offering structured education are also of concern.

Following Hypo Awareness Week last week, in the latest #Type1uncut videos we’re talking about hypos: different hypo experiences, hypo hangovers, most memorable hypos, as well as how to spot the symptoms and how to treat them.

Information Prescriptions – help to live well with diabetes

This autumn we are launching information prescriptions. Your GP or Nurse will be prompted to issue a prescription if you have diabetes and high readings for HbA1C, blood pressure, or cholesterol.

Starting out with a small grant from Diabetes UK, Professor Roy Taylor developed and trialled a convenient, low-cost way to provide regular eye screening tests for people with diabetes using a retinal camera. As a result, diabetes is no longer the leading cause of blindess as the early signs of diabetic eye disease (retinopathy) can be picked up and treated effectively.

Get Involved

• We want to know about the care that you or a person you know with diabetes is currently receiving. At the end of the survey you are also given the opportunity to express any complaints that you have, which will give us a clear picture of gaps in the service, which we will use to campaign to the NHS on how they should be improving diabetes care across the UK. You can fill in the survey here.

• In November Enjoy Food launches. A new programme of resources called Enjoy Food to make food enjoyable again for both families and individuals living with, or concerned about, diabetes. As part of this new range of resources, we are creating short videos for our website. We’re asking people living with diabetes to share with us how what they eat has changed since their diabetes diagnosis. We also want to know what they like to cook and eat – and how they’ve made their meals healthier.
